Pleasure of travelling is for the traveler. I am not a frequent traveler rather an occasional explorer. And there is no pleasure in traveling alone.
So I travel with friends, make friends or carry a book. A book is almost a perfect companion for any form of travel, be it a one day'er or over a number of days. Even with friends I carry a book; I might only thumb as couple of pages or at time entirely forget that there is one lying at bottom of my sack or firmly tucked in a side pocket of my backpack.
While traveling there are a lots of uneventful space or interval where either there is noting to do or nothing to see. Say you are waiting for your train to arrive and its late, your connecting flight is at 23 hours and its only sunset at the tropics; you are in a night bus and the movie playing is not of your kind, or you are at a lunchroom waiting for your lunch which will take 20 more minutes. Pull out that book!
What type of book do you read when you are travelling, is it a romantic book when you are traveling seaside; a science friction into the mountains; read mythology to a temple town?- I have no idea, I read Animal Farm on my way to office and Saki in Leh; thank you very much! I have no genre specific love and do not sync type of roads with kind of book I read. Short stories are better just because they are short. Or even an epic once you let the characters walk by your side. Meanwhile for tourists you always have Lonely Planet Travel Guide etc!
Sometimes if the story seems to be becoming too interesting I would skip reading and leave it for a later time. Getting too consumed between the pages might make you forget where you are and where you came from.
